The Whitlam government was elected into the parliament on 2nd of December 1972, and being the first Labor government to be elected in 23 years. Gough Whitlam became the prime minister of Australia after Robert Menzies, who retired in 1966. The government, from 1966, went to a steady declination until Whitlam came in and broke it.
