The Earthquake
The main shock occurred without warning 3 February 1931 at 10.48 in
the morning. It was a large scale earthquake, measuring magnitude 7.8 on
the Richter scale.The earth began to sway. Buildings moved back and forth on their foundations and some collapsed. Pillars and girders in two-storeyed
buildings gave way bringing the upper floor crashing down on the one
below. Telegraph poles leaned over. Huge cracks opened up in the streets.
