For many years New Zealand relied on Britain as their defence and trading partner.

New Zealand saw the world through British eyes, and saw their interests as being the same as Britains. New Zealand was sometimes referred to as ‘Britain’s farmyard’ because Britain bought almost all of New Zealand’s products and supplied most of its imports.
