The Summer of '53

It was the summer of 1953. I was a junior in high school, working at the New Jersey seashore at an amusement ride arcade on the boardwalk in Ocean City along with one of my best friends that I grew up with. We were both jazz lovers, and when we saw that the Stan Kenton Orchestra was going to appear at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, about 10 miles up the shoreline, we vowed not to miss it.
