The Death of a Ball Turret Gunner” is a poem that depicts in horrid detail the death of an American gunner, in a B-17 high altitude bomber during World War II. This type of incident was not uncommon at the time, due to the fact that ball turret gunners were vulnerable to enemy fire. The turret was located on the bottom of the aircraft, and it enabled a very small man, who could fit in tight quarters, to use machine guns in order to defend his bomber in the event of an attacking fighter.
