Nicolaus Copernicus

      Nicolaus Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473, in Thorn, Poland, to a family of merchants and municipal officials. When he was still young, Copernicus's uncle, Bishop Lukasz Watzenrode, made sure that his nephew obtained a good education at the best possible universities (Larson). In 1491 Copernicus entered Jagiellonian, where he studied mainly liberal arts for four years without receiving a degree.
