“Originally conceived as a ghost story, Frankenstein is more than this. It is a study of alienation.” Examine Shelly’s portrayal of the monster in this light.

Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein merges not only the typical elements of the ghost story genre, but that of tragedy and romance. Alienation can be seen as a separation from society resulting from hostility, and in the novel the monster experiences this due to his grotesque form, Walton feels he is alienated through his ‘desire for the company of a man’ who could sympathise with him, whereas Victor isolates himself from society in order to jealously guard his scientific endeavours.
