The remarkable growth of the American economy in the late 19th century obviously needs explaining, but more often than not economic historians look for explanations of the emergence of significant trends by trying to find their "causes." If we want to discuss the historical "cause" of any phenomenon, we must enter the world of analysis and interpretation.
