It is a poem about the suburban life of women in the 1950s. In particular the female subject of the poem is a suburban woman, a mother who is attempting to combine her love of music with her role of housewife and mother. It is about the balancing of the needs and wants of the self and of the children and the further danger of being swamped by drudgery. There is an indication “tasty dishes from stale bread” of there being a possibility of a certain satisfaction in the role as well.
